DTF Printing

Definition

Direct-to-Film printing, a transfer method where designs are printed onto a special film, coated with adhesive powder, and heat-pressed onto garments or substrates.

Context

DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing is a transfer-based decoration method where designs are printed onto clear PET film using CMYK plus white pigment inks, dusted with thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) adhesive powder, and cured in an oven or on a conveyor dryer at approximately 160 degrees Celsius. The resulting transfer is then heat-pressed onto the garment or substrate at 160-170 degrees Celsius for 15-20 seconds. Unlike DTG, DTF works on virtually any fabric, including cotton, polyester, nylon, denim, tri-blends, and even leather, without requiring pre-treatment. The technology gained rapid commercial adoption from 2020 onward, offering a versatile middle ground between DTG's digital convenience and screen printing's substrate flexibility.

Process and Applications

DTF production starts with printing a mirrored full-color design onto PET film at 600-1200 dpi resolution. White ink is printed as the final layer to act as an opaque backing. While the ink is still wet, fine TPU adhesive powder (80-200 micron particle size) is applied and the excess shaken off before the film passes through a curing oven at 100-130 degrees Celsius to melt the adhesive. The cured transfer can be stored for weeks or months and pressed on demand. Heat application at 160-170 degrees Celsius for 15-20 seconds bonds the transfer to the garment. DTF transfers produce vibrant, opaque prints on dark fabrics and maintain good wash durability, typically 40-60 wash cycles. Applications span custom t-shirts, hoodies, bags, hats, shoes, and promotional textiles where fabric composition varies.

DTF's batch-and-press workflow integrates well with web to print fulfillment. Orders can be ganged, with multiple designs printed side by side on a single film roll, maximizing material usage and print efficiency. Production software automatically nests incoming designs, generates white underbase layers, and mirrors artwork for transfer. Because transfers are pre-produced and shelf-stable, fulfillment centers can build inventory of popular designs and press them onto garments as orders arrive, reducing turnaround to same-day dispatch. Print-on-demand providers increasingly offer DTF alongside DTG, routing orders based on fabric type, design complexity, and cost optimization rules.

What is the difference between DTG and DTF printing?

DTG prints ink directly onto the garment fabric using an inkjet printer, working best on cotton. DTF prints onto an intermediate PET film that is then heat-pressed onto the garment, allowing it to adhere to virtually any fabric type including polyester, nylon, and blends. DTF also eliminates the need for garment pre-treatment and allows transfers to be prepared in bulk and stored for later application.

How long do DTF prints last on clothing?

DTF transfers typically withstand 40-60 wash cycles before noticeable fading, provided garments are washed inside out on a cool cycle and not tumble dried on high heat. The TPU adhesive creates a flexible bond that resists cracking, though the print does sit slightly on the surface rather than absorbing into fibres as with DTG, giving it a thin, smooth hand feel.

Can DTF transfers be applied to hard surfaces?

DTF transfers are primarily designed for textiles and flexible substrates. They can adhere to some hard surfaces like wood and coated ceramics if heat and pressure are applied, but results vary. For rigid substrates, UV direct printing or sublimation onto polymer-coated surfaces generally produces more reliable, durable results.
